Mitchelton Pre School

Following a Tradition
Early on the morning of April 25, many families from Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre gathered with the crowds at Gaythorne RSL to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. At the tender ages of 3 and 4 years, the significance of such an early morning event with so many people could easily be lost. However, for these children, it is just the beginning of their lifelong learning about what Anzac Day means to Australians.
The marchers gathered to walk proudly behind the Kindy flag.  The children, some of whom were wearing the badges of older generations or of serving family members, happily held hands with their parents. They walked together with hundreds of others along Samford Road to assemble at Gaythorne. The flag made its way into many of the children’s hands as we marched proudly to the Dawn Service. The faces of the children who helped to lay the wreath clearly revealed their focus and concentration in completing their task to help commemorate this proud tradition.
Throughout the week the children at Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre have been involved in discussions about the work of our Armed Forces. Stories and experiences highlighted various past and current roles in keeping our country as well as other countries safe.
The children had visits from current serving Armed Force personnel to talk about their jobs in the Army and to show the children uniforms, badges and kit bags. Stories were told about their work here in Australia and Overseas. The children gained insights into the lives of soldiers and realised that they are often Mums and Dads too.

As the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landings now passes, the children of Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre are among the next generation to continue the tradition of remembering the Anzacs.

Interrupted Start to Netball Season

After a start to the 2015 netball season which has seen a lack of continuity because of frequent wet weather and holidays throughout April, Arana Netball teams are hoping for a good run with games now. Fixtures recommenced in May, with make-up games for abandoned wet games also scheduled.
Arana teams continue to have mixed success as they play the various teams in their grades. At the end of the first round, teams will be considered for re-grading where it is obvious that any team is too weak or too strong for the grade they are playing in.
Quite a number of Arana teams were able to take part in a round robin intra-club morning in April to give players some game practice during the lengthy holiday break. This was held at the Club courts in Leslie Patrick Park. A junior coaching clinic (for nippers to 13 year olds) is also planned to be held at the courts on 3rd June. More details will be given to the teams concerned closer to this event.
Arana teams enthusiastically supported Downey Park Netball’s Pink Day on 9th May. This has become an annual event in the Downey Park calendar as a fund-raiser for the breast cancer cause. The Downey Park Netball club carnival is scheduled for Sunday 31st May, and several Arana teams will nominate to compete in this.
Arana Netball Club is pleased to have received a GCBF grant (from the Department of Liquor and Gaming Regulation,) to purchase a P.A. system, projector, and a laptop with bag and software. These items will be of great benefit to the Club.
Arana Netball Club meetings are held on the third Monday of the month throughout the year. Meetings are open for all to attend, and parents and senior players are encouraged to attend meetings whenever possible, to know more about the running of the Club, and to contribute to the Club’s development. The next meetings are set for this Monday, 18th May, and 15th June. Meetings are held in the Arana Sports room at the Hills District Community Centre, Dawson Parade, Arana Hills, commencing at 7.30pm.

GOLDEN VALLEY KEPERRA LIONS CLUB

GOLDEN VALLEY KEPERRA LIONS CLUB
"We Serve"
The GVK Lions have recently taken delivery of a new purpose designed barbecue trailer. Transport, set-up, food preparation and clean-up will now be simpler and more efficient for our hard working members raising funds for the many and varied community projects supported by the Lions. Featuring stainless steel surfaces in all food preparation areas you can be assured that the high standards to which we strive will not only be maintained but considerably enhanced.
The trailer underwent commissioning trials at Harvey Norman and at the Bracken Ridge Lions miniature steam trains prior to being subjected to the demands of performing for the Anzac Day dawn service gunshot breakfast. Approximately twenty Lions Clubs joined together to work side by side to provide breakfast for people attending the Dawn Service at Anzac Square. The morning started at 4am when many sausages on rolls and bacon and egg rolls (we lost count of the quantities) were produced and loaded into bain maries ready for the hungry crowds at 5.30am.
Remember that new members are always welcome at GVK Lions, Lionesses and Leos. Please speak to one of our members or for more information send an email to  gvk@lionsq3.org.au or visit http://lionsclubs.org.au/join-lions/ .

Rotary

The Work of Shelterbox in Nepal
After Nepal’s worst earthquake in 80 years, hospitals in the country’s capital Kathmandu were devastated, forcing medical staff to treat their patients outside with dwindling supplies.
However, ShelterBox, an Initiative of Rotary International, has been able to provide tents to four hospitals in the city creating safe, covered spaces where patients can be treated in privacy. They will be used for carrying out minor operations, changing dressings and as mobile health clinics too.
Phil Duloy, ShelterBox response team member, said: 'Most hospitals in Kathmandu have just been condemned, so we are immediately distributing our pre-positioned stocks in the city to give a space for the medical staff to treat the patients who have been evacuated in the hospital grounds.'
Fellow response team member and former nurse and midwife Nicola Hinds describes the scene at one of the hospitals. She said: ‘The devastation is enormous. My husband is a GP in Northern Ireland, and it really puts things into perspective about how lucky we are to have the NHS when you see the scene here. People are being treated in the open air with limited resources - the difference is staggering.'
ShelterBox is also sending further aid to Nepal, starting with an initial 500 shelter kits, which can be used to mend structures and create temporary shelters. However, our pre-positioned stocks of equipment in the country meant that the response team was able to start helping people whose lives have been shattered by the earthquake as soon as they arrived in the country.
They have aid pre-positioned all around the world to make sure that we can help people in need as soon as possible. Geeta Shrestha, Nursing Director at one of the four hospitals that received our tents, said: ‘From my heart and from my hospital, I thank you.’
