Jane Prentice, Federal Member for Ryan joined Health Minister, the Hon Sussan Ley MP at St Lucia Family Practice recently to announce the Coalition Government’s $26 million Immunise Australia budget package.
The budget package will help busy parents in Ryan keep their child’s vaccinations up to date and dispel common myths about immunisations.
Mrs Prentice said immunisation providers in Ryan, such as local GPs, would be given an incentive payment to identify children in their practice overdue for vaccinations.
She said it was part of a balanced approach that also included: improving public vaccination records and reminder systems; greater public awareness of the benefits of vaccinations; and the Government’s already announced ‘no jab, no play, no pay’ policy.
"We are a Government that understands the stresses busy parents face every day and that many missed immunisations are unintentional, which is why we are providing incentives and support to help keep children up to date with their vaccinations,” Mrs Prentice said.
“However there are parents intent on refusing to immunise their child and our ‘no jab, no play, no pay’ measure ensures they understand there is a significant impact attached to their actions.
“Immunisations do not just protect your child, but others as well – it is known in medical terms as ‘herd immunity’. Vaccination is therefore one area of life where it pays to be part of the crowd.
“It is important parents in Ryan understand that complacency presents as much of a threat to immunisation rates and the safety of our children as conscientious objections do.”
Mrs Prentice said the 2015/16 Budget would include a $26 million boost to the Federal Government’s Immunise Australia programme over the next four years.
