GRANT ASSISTS YOUTH CLUB TO SHOOT FOR THE STARS
Mitchelton Youth
Club has received a grant from Brisbane City Council to help bring gymnastics
equipment up to an international standard.
The funding will
be used to upgrade the club’s sprung floor to an international standard.
Club manager
Jacinda Tunney said she was very grateful for Council’s support as members
would now be practicing on the same flooring as seen in other competitions
worldwide.
Mitchelton Youth
Club members Abby, Nicole and Emily (pictured) were keen to start practicing
their routines on the new flooring to give them an even better chance of
competing for Australia.
The trio will be
travelling to Melbourne at the end of this month to compete in the Australian
Gymnastics Championships with the ambition to compete in the World Games in
China next year.
Club Patron Cr
Andrew Wines said he was proud to be involved with the club and assist through
the works to make the club an even better facility for members, staff and
guests.
SENIORS URGED TO SHARE THEIR TALENT
Senior residents
with a love for the limelight are invited to hone their performing skills by
enrolling in one of the upcoming Lord Mayor’s Seniors Cabaret Master Classes to
be held throughout Brisbane.
The free master
classes will be led by top theatre performers providing an opportunity for
seniors to develop and showcase their creative talent.
A tribute to the
1960’s, Cr Andrew Wines said this year’s showcase will see music from the
Beatles, Johnny Cash and Aretha Franklin celebrated.
“The closest
workshop for residents will be held at Upper Kedron and residents are
encouraged to participate through song, dance, comedy and instrumental
performances,” he said.
“It is a great
way to get out and connect with other members of the community.”
Lord Mayor Graham
Quirk said the classes have grown in popularity by over 60 per cent since 2013.
He encouraged
interested seniors to get in quick to register their interest.
Ten master
classes will be held at numerous locations across Brisbane between 1–18 June.
These will be followed by nine suburban showcases throughout July.
The suburban
showcases will culminate in a gala cabaret performance in Brisbane City Hall on
Sunday 16 August, during Seniors Week.
Seniors
participating in the program must be aged 60 years or over as of 18 August
2013.
Workshops are
free to attend, but bookings are required.
NEW MEMORIAL GARDEN AT FERNY GROVE STATE SCHOOL
Ferny Grove State
School have unveiled a new ANZAC memorial garden to pay tribute to the many
soldiers who have served to defend our way of life.
Around 20 per
cent of Ferny Grove State School students are from Defence families and the
memorial is a great way to recognise Defence personnel’s service as well of the
commitments of their families.
The sandstone
memorial garden is principally funded by the P&C alongside the community
and is presented in the shape of a poppy flower to mark the ANZAC Centenary
year .
Although the
P&C and the community funded the memorial, the school’s Ferny Grove
Festival was supported by Council’s festival grants scheme which allowed the
money to be raised more quickly.
Cr Wines said he
was proud to support the school through this endeavour.
“As the son of soldiers, I understand the pressures on
these students by their parents calling and I am glad the school has built this
monument.”
