The Ferny Districts
Cricket Club have celebrated a milestone with the grand opening of new
facilities to pave the way for future growth across northwest Brisbane.
Cr Andrew Wines
(Enoggera) successfully lobbied Brisbane City Council for funding to help the
club upgrade facilities in preparation for a wider plan to expand the usage of
the fields.
The current proposal will
see the grounds shared with other sporting and community groups including
Phoenix Netball Club, Arana Ascot Hockey Club and other local recreational
groups of a smaller nature.
Council awarded funding
to the Ferny Districts Cricket Club to build a new canteen, all-access walkway,
and a power board; to make way for a cricket net lighting upgrade.
Additionally, Phoenix Netball Club received funding to assist in building two
new courts at the facility.
President of the Ferny
Grove Districts Cricket Club Andrew Middleton said Council’s support had
allowed the club to take the next step to improve facilities for families and
other clubs sharing the grounds.
“Certainly, these works
are a core part of the infrastructure improvements which will facilitate
establishing a junior women’s hockey club and junior netball club at the
facility,” he said.
“For the cricket club,
this allows us to provide a wider range of training and playing format options
for boys and girls, through to improving the sport opportunities available for
the young adults in our community.”
Cr Wines said he was
proud to support and be involved with such a dedicated and driven community who
have helped to secure this excellent outcome for the area.
