“I encourage all local groups, however big or small, to apply for the next round of funding and make the most of this wonderful opportunity,” he said.

Ferny Grove schools urged to book into Premier’s reading challenge
Member for Ferny Grove, Mark Furner MP HAS encouraged local schools to take up the Premier’s Reading Challenge to help foster a love of books among children.
Mr Furner said as part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge from 19 May to 28 August students would aim to read a minimum number of books.
“I want to encourage local schools to take up the challenge because this is a great way to support existing literacy programs,” he said
“This is all about encouraging our students to get more involved in reading.”
During the challenge Prep to Year 2 students aim to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 – 4 students aim to read 20 books and Years 5 – 9 aim to read 15 books.
Mr Furner said throughout the challenge students – along with their parent/guardian – would keep track of their reading progress.
“The challenge is great opportunity for classes to celebrate reading milestone with students along the way and students will also receive Certificates of Achievement,” he said.
Slow down and look out for students
Motorists are being warned to slow down near school zones and be mindful of the presence of students near the road.
Member for Ferny Grove, Mark Furner MP said children can be unpredictable and drivers need to take that into account when they are travelling in the vicinity of schools.
“Motorists should be vigilant at all times to ensure the safety of children travelling to and from the school gates,” Mr Furner said.
“Slowing down to 40km/h when you are in a school zone could be all it takes to prevent a tragedy. I urge every driver to be aware of children getting off buses and walking or riding their bikes and scooters to school.”
Mr Furner said school crossing supervisors and the Queensland Government’s successful school zone flashing lights program are making the journey to school safer for students.
He also encouraged parents to drop off and pick up their children in designated zones, to follow the rules and be vigilant about ensuring their children are supervised when getting in and out of cars.
“The golden rules are for drivers to slow down and obey the rules, and for parents to be vigilant in helping children cross the roads safely,” Mr Furner said.

Queensland Family History Society: Irish Research
Do you have Irish ancestors? If so, you are in good company; Ned Kelly, Thomas Keneally and Paul Keating can trace some of their ancestral roots to Ireland. According to the Australian Embassy in Dublin, thirty per cent of the Australian population can claim some degree of Irish ancestry. Apart from Ireland, Australia is more Irish than any other country. As a proportion of the population, the number of people with Irish ancestry is higher in Australia than in the United States, despite more people of Irish descent emigrating to the United States in comparison to Australia.
The Queensland Family History Society
will be holding a seminar to assist researchers with Irish ancestry. Entitled Ireland to Australia: researching your Irish
ancestors, the seminar takes place at the Queensland Baptists Conference
Centre, 53 Prospect Road, Gaythorne, on Saturday 13 June 2015, from 9.00 am
until 12.30 pm. The cost is $15 for QFHS members and $20 for non-members.
The speakers are Dr Richard Reid and
Mary King. Richard Reid was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and came to
Australia in 1972. He obtained a Ph.D. on the topic of Irish assisted
emigration to NSW, 1848-1870. He has published a number of books including A decent set of girls: The Irish famine
orphans of the Thomas Arbuthnot, 1849-1850. Mary King is the Convenor of
the QFHS Irish Special Interest Group.
You can book for this seminar on the
QFHS website, www.qfhs.org.au/events/qfhs-seminars where you will find more
information about the seminar and the Society. For enquiries about the Society,
contact the Secretary (email: secretary@qfhs.org.au).

Council Helps Local Church
Arana Hills Uniting Church received a $12,697.30 boost after successfully securing community grant funding from Morton Bay Regional Council.
The contribution from Morton Bay Regional Council was used to refurbish the kitchen in the hall. This is needed after 30 years of use by many groups, some from the church and some from the community.
M.B.R.C. Mayor Allan Sutherland said a number of local organisations have been successful in the latest round of community grants funding.
“Council’s community grants support local community, youth, senior citizen, sporting and cultural events and activities,” Mayor Sutherland said.
“Funding is available for initiatives that respond to community issues, enhance well-being and safety and encourage participation and partnerships. They're a great way for Council to support the community organisations, activities, events and initiatives that matter to our residents.”
Carolyn Drummond from the Arana Hills Uniting Church thanked Morton Bay Regional Council for their support.
“The upgrading kitchen has been a useful part of our outreach to those in need of a pleasant hall for group activities,” said Carolyn. “The Mens Shed meetings, Play Group, youth activities and some happy celebrations for families with milestone birthdays and anniversaries are just some of the many activities hosted in this hall.”
Mayor Sutherland said local groups should be commended for their outstanding work in the community.
“I would like to thank each group for taking the time to make a funding application to the Morton Bay Regional Council Community Grants Program,” the Mayor said.

Mitchy Garden Club
After the 7th May meeting of the Mitchelton and
Districts Garden Club with Debbie Aitcheson talking about Herbs, the next
meeting will be held on Thursday, 4th June, at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. Kath
Stumer is the guest speaker for the June meeting and her topic will be Zygo
Cactus.
Zygo Cactus is a water wise plant, easy to grow given
correct conditions and requires low maintenance. It is ideal as a potted plant
and magnificent in a hanging basket. A rich porous potting mix made up of equal
parts of good garden soil, sand, vermiculite, and leaf mould or compost is
suitable. Plenty of light is necessary, but not direct sunlight especially in
the summer months. If grown outdoors, a sheltered position is preferred. Zygo
Cactus will tolerate some shade and also drought conditions. Regularly check
that the potting mix requires moisture before watering. A weak liquid
fertiliser, applied 3-4 times a year produces good flowering. The main
flowering period occurs during the winter months.
For those who celebrate Mother’s Day which occurs on
the second Sunday in May, have you considered a present of a flowering potted
plant? There are many from which to choose, Zygo Cactus being one of them, and
this living gift will last for months and months.
The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets on the
first Thursday of the calendar month. Meetings commence with morning tea at
9.45 a.m. and new members and visitors are most welcome. The hall is situated
at the corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera. It is close to public
transport and wheelchair friendly. (For drivers, Trundle Street is a “no
through” street and is accessible via Pratt Street – Refidex Map 139 A10.)
For more information, please phone Pat, the president,
on 3356 1256.
